Anglo-Saxon Culture: A Critique


The present situation in the Gulf brings home some key issues.  Anglo Saxon nations seem to assume that their culture is 'better' than that of other cultural blocs, and that it should be imposed on other regions such as the Islamic world or continental Europe. In fact, Anglo-Saxon culture is more flawed than most and should certainly not be seen as being de facto superior. Anglo Saxon culture prevails mainly through Hitler’s foolish attack on Russia, an accident of history, rather than any intrinsic superiority. This shifted the geo-political balance of power from the Eurasian plain to the Atlantic, gifting the technologically and militarily inferior Anglophone nations temporary world dominance.

My own studies of conservative continental philosophy reveal that the cracks in anglophone civilizations owe a great deal to a flawed cultural template. An ineffectual education system, low levels or political participation, angry alienation among males, a falling birth rate and a dangerous youth are usually seen as universal phenomena, hazards of Post-modern life. There is seldom any acknowledgement that they are specific to anglophone societies or that Anglo Saxon culture may itself contribute to them.

When liberalism is practised in an Anglo Saxon context, anarchy tends to ensue. Why is this? In Holland or German speaking countries, anarchy is constrained by a strong, informal consensus that censors needless self-indulgence. Anglo Saxon cultures lack any such informal constraints; the social fabric is naturally thinner. Consequently, liberal policy results automatically in crime, promiscuity, unwanted births and other maladies.

Feminism in Anglo Saxon cultures has a strident, misandrist undertone entirely lacking in continental countries. It has little to do with improving life for women and a lot to do with persecuting, hating and excluding men, something it has been singularly successful in achieving. Julius Evola has written that Anglo Saxon culture spontaneously promotes poor relations between the sexes and misandry in general due to its underlying puritanism. This gives women the notion that the world ‘owes’ them something (a living, an explanation) along with the idea that men are beasts of burden for their edification and amusement. Anglo Saxon women fundamentally do not like men. Evola’s case is proved by the arrogant mien that descends on all Anglo Saxon females at puberty. This thousand yard disdain, idleness and insolence has been prominent in shaping the trans-generational underclass. Women in Anglo Saxon countries seem to think that being born female gives them an automatic right to do no work, make no constructive contribution to society of any kind or even commit crimes with impunity. Witness the case of Louise Woodward. Who really thinks that a middle aged, working class male would have headlined the national press in the same circumstances?  Men’s studies is a largely Anglo Saxon phenomenon. It is needed here to defend men in a way it is simply not needed elsewhere. Anglo Saxon male suicide rates, educational failure and frustrated alienation owes more to informal Anglo Saxon misandry than recent cultural changes.

Aside from this, the social damage caused by Anglo Saxon pandering to women is apparent everywhere:

•    70% of divorces are initiated by women in Anglo Saxon societies, with untold damage to children and society in general.
•    Children reared by lone females are many times more likely to become delinquent.
•    Children reared by lone females are 6 times less likely to escape poverty.
•    Children reared by lone females are many times more likely to exhibit behavioural difficulties at school
•    Every 3rd child conceived is aborted; uniquely, Anglo Saxon women selfishly view the life or death of an unborn child as a political fashion statement

In Welfare, Housing and Health Anglo-Saxon women are offered enormously preferential treatment by sheer dint of their sex. This inequality now even extends to education, where examinations have been deliberately adjusted to ensure female supremacy. Men’s oppression and ill-treatment is now so routine in anglophone societies it has become 'transparent'.

Paradoxically, this does not seem to have improved the lot of female happiness or well-being. Young girls in France and Germany can walk the streets at all hours without fear of abduction, rape or murder. But how often do we hear of young Continental hitch-hikers being murdered by British males? The greater respect women have for men in Continental societies stifles the murderous sexual rage proletarian men inevitably harbour towards women. In Britain we have already reached a state where females live in clandestine fear of men. Serial killers we are told, are an overwhelmingly Anglo Saxon phenomenon. How strange that no one has ever linked the widespread violence against women in Anglo Saxon nations to the low status and discrimination that many men in those societies experience. In the last analysis men are stronger, more aggressive and more destructive than women. They have the capacity to make women’s lives unendurable. Both women and the elite in Anglophone societies seem oblivious to this fact. If the legitimate sense of grievance many men now feel is not forcefully addressed, Anglo Saxon culture may well not survive.

Henry Miller and D.H. Lawrence are but two anglophone writers with a deep distaste for their own culture. This reproach hinges on the unhealthy relations prevailing between the sexes. Wagner opined that a woman incapable of unconditional love was a thing of horror. Anglophone women view all relations with men as a process of sexual barter. English or American women are conditioned to only offer love on promise of economic reward. To put it simply, Anglo Saxon women are profoundly selfish. Because of this, they are deeply unfulfilled as women or as human beings. The deep-seated self-hatred of Anglophone women evinces this. Few if any anglophone women are at peace with themselves as lovers or mothers in the way continental women are.

Many Anglophone women seem, in fact, psychologically aberrant. Only women with deep psychic wounds could delight in the systemized liquidation of their own offspring via factory abortions. Whatever one’s view of abortion, it seems to have become a political fashion statement in anglophone cultures, even a boasting point. We have reached a point beyond which this practice has assumed a self-indulgent, wanton quality.

Anglo Saxon young people are a unique species. They have no link to the social order at all.

In Continental Europe the young behave like normal people, quite unlike the grinning Morlocks of Anglo Saxon street corners. In the Anglosphere, everyone under 25 seems to live in an insular world impervious to reason, discourse or responsibility. This finds tangible expression in the fact that most young English people aren’t even registered to vote. Instead of trying to get young people to engage with politics you first have to get them to engage with society, to make them feel they belong to a collective entity. In this, Anglo Saxon societies fail abysmally. In the living sense, it is extremely difficult to engage with an Anglo Saxon person under 25. There are shutters inside their eyes. They view all others outside an absurdly narrow age range with distrust or even hostility. This comes partly from the atomised nature of Anglophone society. There is no organic sense of inclusion here, just a string of loosely connected Post modern consumer tribes. But in the case of the young, there is more at work.

As with women, Anglo Saxon youth seem to become unreachable around puberty. But while in the case of women this is due to their new-found sexual status in a puritanical context, with the young it is due to the electronic media 'switching onto' them. Many teachers comment on this precipitous change. Formerly nice kids suddenly become uncontrollable, hostile and vindictive. It would be reassuring to suggest this is entirely due to testosterone surges. But if this were the case, why doesn’t it effect Swedish or German kids?

The anomic quality of Anglo Saxon society renders its youth particularly susceptible to the dramatically hostile messages of the American media. Were these exhortations to misogyny, misanthropy and misconduct falling on the socially integrated, their import would be minimal. But instead they are falling on the angry and excluded with predictably deleterious effects. Much is made of the fact that crime is committed by the poor, by males or by blacks. The fact the 80% of crime is committed by people under 25 is heard much less often. The dominant tone of the media aimed at this age group is snarling, anti-social bestiality, arrant materialism and ferocious anti-intellectualism. There is surely a link there.

De Benoist of the GRECE avers that the European cultural heritage is superior to that of the Anglo Saxon bloc. I disagree. In some areas, notably technology, the Anglo Saxon societies are unquestionably dominant. In others, namely the cultural life, social planning and general education we undoubtedly lag behind. William Blake noted that Anglo Saxon culture had an excessive emphasis on reason to the exclusion of other psychological traits. This imbalance seems to be at the root of most Anglo Saxon social problems, Blake’s observation remaining as valid today as 200 years ago. Individualistic Reason is the ideal medium for technological advancement. It has little to offer the social/cultural worlds however, which is why anglophone countries lag in these areas.

Goethe’s spat with Newton on the issue of colour relates to this conceptual schism. Newton tore out the spiritual, aesthetic and emotional dimensions of colour by reducing it to light split by a prism. Goethe sought to restore its spiritual and social qualities. Thus began a long-standing feud between the German and Anglophone intellectual worlds. Dr Rudolf Steiner, Thomas Mann, Heidegger and Wittgenstein all resented the arid, one-dimensional nature of anglophone scientific life. Even today English science students specialize excessively early, emerging from higher education as absolute philistines. The anglophone world has no Goethe straddling C P Snow’s Two Cultures. This should not surprise us.

Underlying the notion of Anglo Saxon civilization is individual liberty. This contrasts with the organic social model that prevails in most other cultures. Anglo Saxon civilization stresses the individual’s isolation from the collective. By contrast, Continental Europeans stress the obligation of the individual to the collective. At a more highbrow level, this distinction explains the obsessive exploration of meaning and perception characteristic of Anglophone intellectual life as opposed to the more socially contingent approach of Continentals.

Anglo Saxon preoccupation with the individual is also at the root of most of the foregoing problems. This is because individualism unconstrained by society inevitably produces a culture of mass alienation, anomie, inequality of opportunity and hegemonic instability. These in turn poison gender and social relations and diminish the quality of life for all.

The key to salvaging Anglo Saxon culture lies not in sabotaging its proud tradition of intellectual freedom and concise rationality. It is no surprise that the dominant technological nation is Anglo Saxon; or that the minor Anglophone nations like Britain have a disproportionate role in scientific discovery. The trick is to retain these achievements while stealthily correcting the social problems that threaten to engulf the Anglophone world. It does not bode well for any cultural bloc when half its citizens no longer vote, male suicide runs at record levels and an vast, trans-generational underclass spreads like fungus. Whatever Charles Murray suggests, the intrinsic tone of anglophone culture does not favour economic eugenics and his remedial suggestions are unlikely to be realized. On the other hand, something has to be done if Anglo Saxon civilization is not to collapse under Welfare claims, crime, male self-exclusion and falling birthrates.
